The Algerian Festival for Arts 7 Cultures

12 Feb 2016

El Andaluz take their audience on a journey around the Southern shores of the Mediterranean, through the Saharan Sufi sounds.

They never fail to end the evening by getting any audience on their feet, dancing to the celebratory Chaabi music of Algeria, or to a classical Egyptian belly dance; this show will be no exception.

The second half of the night will be a creative explosion with various guests from Sudan, Algeria, the UK and Japan. Set to be the perfect night out!

Gaada Diwan de Bechar - UK PREMIERE

The Pan-Africanist Festival of Algiers 1969

The Pan-Africanist Festival of Algiers 1969

 28 May 2015

One of the veteran Algerian Diwane groups, will be performing at Rich Mix on Thursday 28 May, bringing to east London a spiritual ceremony to heal all ills. Although they do not replicate the vivid healing ceremonies, they very much reflect the feel of the lila and perfectly exude the essence of the tradition. Gaâda Diwane Béchar’s musically induced trance and moving sound is accessible and enjoyable, and the late veteran world music DJ Charlie Gillett said of them in the Telegraph that they are as good as anything he’s heard in years.

The Pan-Africanist Festival of Algiers 1969

 6 NOV 2014

In collaboration with Film Africa Festival

The first Pan-African Cultural Festival took place in Algiers in July 1969. This historic festival brought a global spotlight to African culture and arts, celebrating the liberation of African nations from colonial rule and calling for the same freedom for the rest of the continent. William Klein’s film captures the sense of jubilation of the moment and provides historical context for understanding a continent.

SIDI BEMOL - UK PREMMIERE

The Pan-Africanist Festival of Algiers 1969

SIDI BEMOL - UK PREMMIERE

 29 May 2014

Surprising by the richness of his music, Sidi Bémol (a.k.a. Hocine Boukella or Cheikh for the fans) is the composer of fusion: between modernity and tradition, between Algerian chaabi, gnawa, blues and rock, Berber and Celtic music. Changing languages over the albums -Arabic, Kabyle, French and English-, his texts are meaningful, successively poetic, nostalgic, critical, humorous. He depicts society with much tenderness and lucidity…
